CREATIVE PRACTITIONER/RIVER ANIMATEUR

In collaboration with Findhorn Bay Arts, I was in position as the River Animateur/Creative Practitioner, developing a programme over a six month period to support the creative engagement strand of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative, a project of Findhorn, Nairn and Lossie Rivers Trust. Below is an overview of the activities undertaken; the report further details the programme and its delivery.

Reflections on the River Findhorn
A final outcome of the River Animateur/Creative Practitioner role was to produce a report that provided qualitative and quantitative analysis of the programme as a whole. In addition, it provided stepping stones to future cultural activities which could help uplift the continuing programme of the Findhorn Watershed Initiative.
The Celebrations

As a culmination of the engagement period we hosted two public events that celebrated the River Findhorn.
River Connections: Music, at Edinkillie Hall, was an evening of poetry and music, hosted by Andrea Turner and featuring artists who had created work related to the River.
River Connections: Film, at Fornighty Hall was a screening the film Riverwoods and a discussion about the ongoing work of the Watershed Initiative.
The Map & The Stories

A constant companion throughout the project was the six metre map of the watershed. Using this as a framing and a prompt enabled folks to realise the extent and impact of the watershed and easily identify their place and stories of connection.
The map joined us at all of our public events as well as was taken along to a number of coffee mornings at village halls in the region.

The Creative Meet-ups

We collaborated with Wild Things! to bring Andrea Turner to their elder groups that were meeting out in the wild. She guided the participants through writing prompts and we took walks looking at nature through the creative lens.

In order to meet people where they are, we set up a market stall at the Logie Steading Christmas Market. Here we collected stories for the map and in exchange, helped them make cards inspired by the river and its ecology. We also took the map and card making tools to local village hall coffee mornings.
